While someone may have made a decision based upon getting something cheap at the beginning there are still companies adopting the format so it works pretty well for specific types of games.

Vertical screen games shooter
The early days of arcade gaming are littered with vertical screen games,
some of which are truly classics… Phoenix, Moon Cresta, Pleades, Space
Invaders, Gyruss, Galaxians, Galaga … the list goes on. I’d say nearly
all of my favorite games are actually vertical. Then there are modern
day vertical shooters which still rake in the money … Raiden and
variants etc come to mind.
